The Red Sweatshirt Fabric From NYC
I've been looking for a while for a fabric for Burda 12/09 #120, and finally found something I liked in NYC: the red sweatshirt fabric. It is soft, a nice weight, and a nice bright color.
I decided to try on the top before finishing the hems and take some pictures at various hem lengths to see what would look the best. Here they are:A. Original hem length - made without the side slits, this would almost be dress length for me.
B. 4" shorter than original.
C. 8" shorter than original.
D. 10" shorter than original.
I showed the pictures to my husband and asked what he thought. He did not like C at all - the hem is right at the widest part of my body and just about sleeve hem length, too. He liked A and D the best. What do you think? For the moment, it is a bit shorter than A, but I think I'm still going to take off a couple more inches to make it less like a dress and more like a tunic proportional to my body size. This will be pretty easy as I finished the hems with the coverstitch machine.
Other than just some proportional changes, I sewed the top as Burda instructed and really like the finished top. It is comfortable, and the tunic length is a little different from the regular length sweaters I usually wear.Parting Shot: One Done, One To Go. I've been working on my current pair of socks more than usual this week and I got one finished. Now I'll have to get going so that I can get the second one done!

Personally, I think D is the way to go, much more in proportion with your petite frame. Great top!
That is a very nice red.
The top looks great worn with jeans.
My favorite is the "D" length.
I like D the best. B would be my next choice.
D for sure!
I like D the best too! Gosh you are fast! You just got that piece in the house! :) And you are knitting matching socks, too!
Oh, the red is so nice on you. Can I ask where you found this fabric? Was it Mood?
I like D the best; but, I have to comment on how much I liked the idea of pinning different hem lengths and taking pictures...an absolutely fabulous idea. I bet I would have missed the subtle differences just comparing one after the other in a full length mirror.
I like B and D for different reasons. B would keep the backside warmer, for sure, and looks dressier, but I'm 5'2" so I know the "swallowed up" feeling of tunics and the D length is jean-friendly and sporty.
D looks great on you!
Cute top! I like B better on you. D works well too. I think B is more in keeping with the tunic style of this top, while not swallowing you up like A.
I guess I like B better because at this length it's not your usual, typical sweater top: it's something a little more special and interesting :)
I completely agree with your hubby - A & D. A because it is such a nice length for wearing with leggings and tall boots. D - because it's in proportion with your height if the top is to be worn with jeans. Either way, I love that top!
I love both A and D but think D looks more like you!
I think you will get the most use from D, but I think A is really cute if you rock it with tights and boots.
I really like A the best, but if that feels too long then B next.
Your hubby has a good eye! I like A also (I'm also 5'2" and I've been playing around with longer lengths myself this winter--variety is the spice of life!). One thing I've noticed is that a really long top makes it tricky to get into jeans pockets. For the cell phone, you know.
I agree, I like D the best. Your sock is awesome too! I am also intrigued by your bib necklace---very interesting detail!

I like A - more modern looking. But maybe just a couple of inches shorter if you don't want it to look too much like a dress.
I'm with Vicki (and Isabelle) A is more in keeping with a tunic (c and d aren't really tunics), but perhaps 6" shorter?
I like B. It's supposed to be long and B seems proportional.
