Craving bright flowers after a grey New England winter, this is what I made:

I don't believe that I've ever shown the back of the jacket, which is similar in design to the fronts:
You will notice that I do not have a hat in these photos. It did not arrive in time for the photo shoot, but I will show you the hat next week. I have not found the right purse yet. I also did not have time to iron out all the flowers (this is seen better in the close-ups below) before the photo shoot - rest assured, that has been done since!I ended up with 20 insects and 1 arachnid on the garment! I probably could have done more, but no one likes an insect invasion of any sort. Here are some close-ups of the insects, starting with the one butterfly - my children's favorite:
A dragonfly, a ladybug (there are three total) and two bees (there are six bees total):
A cricket (one of three):
Another bee, a group of three ants (there's another group of three somewhere) and the spider:
A closer look at the spider:
Here's a better look at the small trim, and how it fits into the whole scheme of things. The large flower border is suspended by beads between two rows of the narrow trim, which are then in turn, suspended from the body of the jacket by beads. The beading is holding all the border, trims and body together. You can actually see the blouse through the spaces between the border/trim/jacket - that's not jacket lining!
I am very pleased with how this ensemble turned out. I took a chance with the unusual color combination and the bright flowers that the ensemble would actually look decent. Now I know there are those of you who think my stuff is bit like a costume and very over the top. That's fine, I'm not saying my work isn't, in fact I think it is a bit, too. Let's face it, this isn't every day wear type of clothing. Note that I do sew things for every day wear, but this is my artistic outlet, the chance that I have to put my heart and creative resources into making something spectacular. That said, if you put the coat and color combination aside, the skirt and blouse are wearable and more modern looking than they actually are - the patterns are from 1953. I'm not saying they walked off the Paris runways yesterday, but in different fabrications, you've basically got a sleeveless blouse with collar band and front tucks (seen that design element anywhere recently?!?) and a pencil skirt.
For the purpose of showing that a 1950's ensemble is remotely wearable today, I probably will not model the ensemble with a hat or purse and possibly not the gloves. I'm not sure about those. I may try to find a matching set of earrings and necklace. The necklace could possibly be reworked into a pair of bracelets to wear instead of the gloves. Although, I actually like the earrings (worn with this outfit only, of course!):
At the moment, the ensemble is in California for its debut show at the Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara, CA. If you're in the area, please stop by and take a look - click on the link in the Now Showing list to go to the website for further information.Parting Shot: Behind the Scenes. My children, as always have done a good job with the photography. Each child gets a camera to use, this time my daughter was using the Canon Powershot A590 and my son was using the larger Sony Alpha DSLR. Here's just a sneak peek as to what goes on behind the scenes:

Spectacular! You are right, the shirt and blouse are a really nice outfit on their own too.
one word: AWESOME. Another word: FABULOUS....!!!!
All of the work you put into this is absolutely amazing! It's a work of art!
Well done...absolutely smashing, Summerset!!!!!
I love the profile view too, in your "Parting Shot". It reveals a whole new aspect of the ensemble, the very cool shape from the side.
Gorgeous! Such amazing attention to detail. The last photo is my favourite, too.
As much as I love the flowers, I have to admit that I love the insects as much. High praise indeed from an insectophobe (I hope that is a word).
It is has been fun watching this come to life. Thanks for the effort you put into sharing it.
WOW! Seeing the outfit all together just shows how truly amazing it is. You did a fantastic job.
This definitely is art, your canvas and paint being fabric, beads etc. The details are exquisite.
Wearable art, it is truly art! Although I follow your progress I find it hard to believe that you did all this yourself. My favorite part? The critters! Congratulations on finishing!
Wow, wow, wow!!! It's bloomin' spectacular!
WOW!!!!!!!!!! That is a work of art!!! You are so talented.
WOW!
What a tremendous amount of work!
And although I LOVE flowers (especially the ones you've created) I think my favorite part is the insects as well! And I'm not much of fan of insects either! (well except for butterflies - are they considered insects?)
Congratulations!
This outfit is just amazing...so beautiful and attention to detail. You are one creative cookie! Smart too! I hope you win big on this one.
I always love the big reveal at the end - this one was certainly not a disappointment!!
Summerset {big hug} Thank you for sharing this adventure. I can't tell you how much pleasure it has brought me. I have enjoyed each moment watching this project progress. You are a much better person than I. You are blessed with so much talent and patience. All I can say is WOW and I can't wait to tell everyone to come take a look at what you did.
Color me very impressed! A big win with this one.
Fabulous! And thanks for the detail on the insects.
In a word, stunning.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!
I can't find a word to express how admirable is your master piece!

I forgot to congratulate your ear rings choice.
You could find a better choice
Your workmanship and creativity is absolutely amazing. There just aren't enough words to describe how gifted you are, thank you so very much for the inspiration.
Stunning, the amount of work, talent and creativity is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Well done Summerset!
I can see why you were getting stressed at the end. I know you send these off to shows, but I didn't know how near you were to the deadline! I bet you are enjoying having some space in your head again! LOL I know what that is like.
I really agree with you about how modern the blouse and skirt look. You could wear them anywhere special as a summer dress up outfit.
I am glad to see the side as well. It shows how well the outfit suits you.
Hope you have a chance for a bit of a breather now.
Take care,
Sandy in the UK
Phew! you must be glad that is done! And very proud too - a beautiful and creative work of art.
I love your art garments for several reasons. Of course, there is the excellent workmanship – that goes without saying. I love your attention to detail. I love the way you plan the garments. I even love the little bugs! But mostly I love the way you include your family in the process as demonstrated by the parting shot.
What an incredible outfit! I love that one little spider tucked away! I agree about the top and skirt being quite modern. In fact, just last night I cut out a dress with a very similiar neckline from a current Vogue pattern. The shoes are perfect and I love the earrings. Your ability to bring life to sequins and beads in amazing. I am in awe of all you do.
The workmanship is amazing on the jacket - when you were showing us the construction step by step I never perceived it as a garment to a worn. Truly wearable art - with the added bonus of a great skirt and blouse combo.
Wow, Summerset! Your work is simply amazing! I have enjoyed reading and seeing the photos of the process/progress of your art. The flowers, the insects, the construction craftsmanship are truly inspiring!

You know that you have created another amazing work of art. I am in awe of your ability to have a vision, develop a plan and make it work! It is so much fun to watch your progress and see the final garment come to life. Thanks for sharing your processes with us and Summerset it is absolutely beautiful! I especially love how when you remove the jacket, you see a regular outfit...wearable any day by any one of us!
Just awesome!!!
WOW! I am so excited...am going to Pacific International for the first time so will be able to see Garden Path in person. How does this work? Will there be a fashion show? Will you model? Good Luck!
Awesome!!!!! I really love the floral top with the pencil skirt. The close fit is a nice contrast to the fuller jacket. I am in love with the butterfly at the top of garden of flowers.
What an incredible treasure you have created!! I LOVE all the detail in this!
Thank you so much for, yet again, sharing your experience of making a wearable art project. I can sew clothes , but wow! what vision to see a project like this through. I hope it doew well for you at the exhibitions you enter it into.
Congratulations - it's just fantastic! I'm amazed that you can stay focused for such a detailed project and get regular sewing done too!
You look so wonderful. My daughter & I looked. She really likes the insects.
I love the earrings!
Good luck at the shows!
You did it again, a FABULOUS work of wearable art. Like others I really love that you have a more or less regular outfit under the jacket.
Congratulations on finishing. Bet you have a quiet weekend (at least in your head) now.
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing process. Stunning results!
Wow. Love it. Everything works together so well.

I'm going to PIQF next week, so I'll get to see this gorgeous ensemble up close! Woohoo!
Truly a work of art. Good luck with the upcoming contests.
congratulations! It all came together in a remarkable way. I'm impressed that you maintained your artistic vision through all the ups and downs!
Beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing the process with all of us. It is truly amazing to see what the end product is after months of hard work. You are a talented, creative designer.
Summerset, it turned out even better than I was imagining! Well done! I hope it visits the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show in Feb - I would love to see it in person. The colors are fantasic!
It was clear from the start that this would become beautiful, but it's more than that. It's outstanding!
I LOVE it. All perfection! ^-^
I live in the Bay Area and will be attending the PQIF Show!
I've been following all 50+ steps during your garment's construction and wondered if you would be submitting it in the show's Wearable Art category.
I'm excited I'll be able to see it in person later this week. I'm sure it will be even more awe-inspiring. Thank you for sharing the journey. You do really beautiful work.
Wow Summerset, this is amazing! I've so enjoyed the blog posts on this project. All the very best for the show.
I've been following your blog for a while now, and am happy to see the finished outfit. I'm sure the hat will be a terrific addition to this outfit.
Thanks for showing us all your work, piece by piece, conundrum by conundrum. It's inspiring.
