Garden Path - Blouse - Part IV

Almost, But Not Quite Done

I'm *still* working on the blouse. I thought I'd be done by this point, but reality being what it is, that hasn't happened yet. I am planning to finish it tomorrow morning, and will show it to you again in the final photo shoot.

Here it is, now. I can't put it on my dress form because the dress form shoulders are too large for it to fit over, so the black background will have to do for now.

Continuing with finishing all the seams, both the hem and armholes are bound:

The collar is the one thing I haven't finished - it still needs the facing to be stitched down on the inside, the buttonhole facing to be stitched down and the button sewn on.

I will get to that tomorrow morning very early after my husband leaves for work and before the children get up. That is my favorite time to work on things that need careful attention to very technical details. When you're working on something that you really need to pay attention to, when do you work on it and where? Just curious, let me know in the comments!

Tomorrow: some interesting commentary on the Jacket From Stefan's.

Parting Shot: Napping. I heard something in my studio closet and took a look and found Kiwi napping. She's never been in there before, which I am surprised about, since she's a fabric girl.

Later, I looked in and found her sleeping like this. Yes, she is asleep and did not move at all while I took the picture with flash.

Right now, we have three cats: Kiwi, Pix, and Wellington. The girls get along fairly well, with little spats now and again. Wellington is very independent, very curious and not afraid of anything. Even water doesn't bother him. The girls don't like Wellington, and keep their distance; Kiwi has actually become very clingy and hangs around my ironing board or ledge quite a bit now. Eventually, the girls will probably just tolerate him.

Beautiful blouse!

When I need to work on something that takes concentration, it is usually after the children are in bed. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, they all get up about the same time I do in the morning (around 6:00 a.m.), and no matter how I have tried to get up earlier to work on something they all get up with me. . . and if I need to concentrate on something, I need peace and quiet without twenty questions. :-)

Love the pictures of Kiwi.

We don't have children, and my husband takes a long time getting ready in the morning, so I've learned that the last 45 minutes (yes!) before we leave for work is generally a good time for fiddly work. I sit on the living room couch or in the sewing room and concentrate as much as the nearest cat allows. I'm awake, I've had my breakfast, and I've done my chores, so this is "my" time. Liz

That photo of Kiwi sleeping is hilarious!

My best time is anytime the 4 year old is at mother's day out and baby napping. The oldest two won't bother me much. Now when school starts, the 4 year old will be in regular preschool and baby is taking his place at mother's day out, so I will have 2 days a week child-free for housework, sewing, etc.

Thanks for all the beautiful close-ups on the blouse. I always work from about 4 - 6:30 a.m. on projects that require concentration. My house and animals are quiet then. Love Wellington...he looks like our first rescue kitty. Someday if you'd comment on whether or not you've ever done a bias piped waistband...considering changing out some of the straight waistbands on my daughter's fall skirts.

I really like your blouse. The colours are lovely and I am very partial to that style of top. My experience with cats is that they always find a way of working things out. They are often good at ignoring each other!

Kids and cats can get into the most uncomfortable looking positions. My old bones can't take that anymore.
Wellington looks like a lovely big Kitty.
You have a Kiwi and now a Wellington. Is there a New Zealand connection?

I work on my technical stuff during quiet time (read movie time) in the afternoon with my children (my youngest 4 are all home-educated, so this is between 1-3 pm). I also then work on technical things after they are all in bed - even my dh, so no one bothers me!

Early morning when it is quiet is when I get technical....
Such a dazzling blouse!

I laughed out loud when I saw the sleeping cat photo. That is just too funny.

I more of a morning person so try to do the tedious sewing as early as possible. No kids at home, so I usually just hybernate in the sewing room, while DH is watching TV or doing computer stuff.

How adorable! Umm, I don't really do detail work. Anything that requires concentration? I just try to get to it at the start of whenever I sit down to sew...

Love the blouse, can't wait to see it all together!

I'm Pixie. I'm a kiwi. I live in Wellington! Just thought your cats would like to know. Loving the blouse, thanks again for sharing!

The blouse is beautiful - can't wait to see all the parts done and modeled! The sleeping kitty picture is priceless. For the question - I do my best sewing between 10am and 3pm. I don't sew that whole time (well, sometimes I do) - that is just the range that I find best suits me for the "thinking" part of sewing.
Blessings,
Patti

The blouse is beautiful! And so is Kiwi. I do my fussy work in the living room by the big windows so I get the good light. And I play my favorite music and it is most enjoyable. The dogs sit on my feet. Sad to say my cat companion has gone to the fabric closet in the sky after 18 years. He is sorely missed. I'm jealous of your Wellington

No kids/sleeping kids = quiet concentration!
Love the cat passed out in the fabric, too cute!

Kiwi doing the face plant. Our Empress Minnie used to do the same. So asleep we could pick her up and move her. And she'd gain 10 pounds in the process.

We now have kittens, so there is no place to concentrate on technical sewing. It must all be done in fits and starts, or behind closed doors.

My favorite time is very early in the morning too, lol! I get up really early on Saturdays to get the most of my time :)

My children are grown, but I work full time and love to read--so I squeeze sewing time around that. Some mornings I get up, exercise, shower, and then sew for 15 or 20 minutes before work. Some evenings I'm not too tired to sew for an hour after dinner (I make too many mistakes to bother sewing when I'm really tired). And I can sew on weekends--between gardening, house cleaning, and social life. Some weeks I definitely get more sewing done than others!

I'm a beginning sewer, and I've put some posts (and photos) on my journal about my progress:
