Weekend Project - BWOF 07/09 #109A

As soon as I saw the cover of BWOF, I wanted to try the pattern. I knew I had a fabric that would work for it, my daughter even liked the idea, so I stitched it up this weekend. The fabric is a printed jersey from Gorgeous Fabrics, which I'm not sure she has anymore. I had exactly enough to cut the pattern out as a tunic rather than a dress.

This top is very easy to make, although I probably won't make another one as the style is distinct. I did do a few things that made it easier than the instructions given.

First, for the ties, I substituted some 1/4" wide flat braid. I wanted a quicker to make top and fiddling around with narrow, slippery knit ties was not my idea of quick and easy. You could easily substitute any 1/4" wide trim or ribbon that will fit through the casings.

Second, for the arm bands, instead of cutting and applying a separate piece for the casing, as per the instructions, I opted for something easier. I simply serged the elastic to the armhole edge, turned it up and topstitched it in place. Alternatively, you could cut the sleeve portion a little longer, make a true casing and insert the elastic the regular way. Either way is easier than a separate casing.

This top is longer and more voluminous that what I usually wear, so it is a bit out of my comfort zone. You can see how much fabric there is under the arms in the photo below.

I do like it, and it will look good with either black or white shorts. Due to the fact that it is wide and drapey at the neck, I decided just to wear it with a camisole - either white, black or aqua. I didn't want to redraft the pattern and it is fine with the camisole. Overall, very cute and quick to make and should be a good choice for a garment that won't be clingy and sticky when the temperature and humidity rises.

Parting Shot: Blocks. My daughter has been working on a small quilt this summer, too. She has completed half of it at this point. Each of the two blocks you see are actually made of four smaller log cabin blocks, arranged to make squares.

That's a cute top. Could I suggest trying it with narrower bottoms, or maybe leggings? It would give it a sharper look. Your daughter's quilt is looking great- tell her it is a lot farther along than the quilt my daughter ( the 20 year old) is planning on making this summer- she is still gathering and hoarding fabric!

This would also make a fun beach coverup, in the longer version. You're quick, Summerset! And your daughter is adorable.

Cute! I want to make this too, although summer's about to slip out of my grasp so I don't know that I'll get much wear out of it now. Boo for back to school! :D
