Garden Path - Jacket - Part XI

Back to the Drawing Board

Glad you liked the refashioned shirt - thanks! It was a challenge to get all the pieces out of one shirt, but it was a good exercise to try!

So I've started the applique process and while I proceeding at barely a snail's pace, I'm not quite happy with how things are working out. Let me explain.

The flowers themselves are pretty, the colors and shapes are right. Their placement and how they are all working together is not. At least not for me. I've got the hollyhocks on, and now am working down the piece, placing in the other flowers, starting with the roses. Due to space constraints, I'm not able to put in the flowers I'd like to, nor is the piece looking quite right to me. I photocopied a bunch of flowers today, cut them out and started laying them out to make a garden like scene:

I have to tell you, this is not working for me. I'm not sure what is wrong with it. I know it is hard to get a good idea of the finished piece working in black and white, but for some reason, this isn't making me happy.

I think I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board for this applique section. I think I know what will work - something well planned and orderly. Hopefully not boring.

I'll let you know when I get something drawn up!

Zipper tutorial later this week, and yes, the Betty dress will be made in the last choice pictured (despite my deep affection for paisley, which some of you share!).

Parting Shot: Sun Printing. My daughter is trying sun printing for the first time. She seemed to like the process and wants to paint more, so I've got some more paints on order. I hope I haven't created a monster!

I see what you mean. I think the problem is that the flowers are all about the same size. Varying the size should help give them dimension. Bring parts of a petal over the top of a different flower. As in real life make your flowers droop a little. Hope this helps stimulate the thought process.

I agree. Maybe a much smaller size, yet in proportion to each other. It seems way overwhelming in the present sizes.

My first thought is that the scale of everything needs to be much smaller. I would use the three-fifths rule; the top of the tallest embellishment not more than three-fifths up from the bottom of the jacket. Also, for the concept to work, there may need to be less dimension in the flowers and a bit more overlap than you show with your paper images. And I really think it would be nice to be able to see more of the beautiful, quilted, yellow silk through the appliques. Just my thoughts; I know it will be beautiful when you get it all worked out!

Well you have always said this was an organic process so I am sure you will figure it out. What pattern pieces are we looking at here, I can't quite tell?

What is sun printing? My daughter LOVES to paint and looks to be about the same age as your daughter.

The colors are really turning out beautifully. I really like the dark purple showing behind all the flowers.

From looking at the photos, it seems like the flowers need to be smaller. They do look a little stiff, but the paper does enhance that.

Whatever happens, I know that you will figure it out!

It is so neat that your mom leaves comments. I would love it if my mom would take as much interest in my projects!

No advice from uncreative me, I'm sure you'll work it out in the right way.
And I would also like to know what sun printing is.

Were you looking for suggestions?

Variations in scale and maybe a few of the flowers' leaves to create some interesting "negative spaces"...but I agree, once you get this figured out, it will be magnificent and start to flow....
