Rabbit Report #8

Cottontail

The last of the three rabbit girls is now done! This one really isn't any different than Flopsy or Mopsy, but now you've seen the details for all three.

Here are the girl's dresses along with Mother rabbit's dress:

Check out Mopsy's tail, the little spotted rabbit:

Next, paws, feet and heads!

Q/A: Regarding the fur, caseykoester asked if it shredded when I cut it. Actually it doesn't shred much at all. I was hoping for this considering the felt is a bit different than a knit backed faux fur. There will be bits of it around the studio and probably the house for that matter, but it won't be nearly as back as regular faux fur.

She also asked concerning buttonhole twist thread. This thread has been around for a long time and is manufactured specifically for making buttonholes by hand, sewing on buttons and crafts. I suppose you could use it in your machine, but it is thicker and stiffer than regular poly/cotton thread. I suspect that in my machine it would have to be run in the bobbin and that wouldn't work quite well for machine buttonholes. As far as my availability locally, I can only get it in a limited number of colors. The type I have is made by Coats & Clark (a few of my spools shown below), and is glace finished cotton covered polyester. You can also purchase this same type of thread made of silk, too, just google "buttonhole twist".

Parting Shot: Ribbon! I got BOH back yesterday from the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival and with it came the ribbon. It now hangs with my other ribbons.

Those tails are soo cute! They just make me smile. :)

Thanks for answering my queries!
The fur info is great. Felt backed is better than knit - I'll remember. :)

I'm going to check out that buttonhole twist thread. Sounds like an amazing notion to have at the ready.

I love it! I saw these dresses in person yesterday and they are so much cuter in person. Please take pictures at the show so we can see them in action!

I think I did not congratulate you for the success of your bluebird of happyness (I was away for one week and it took me another week to catch up with my blogroll...) so here also from my side: Big congratulations!

I'm sure you know yourself that you did well, but it's always good if others see that, too.

I have experimented quite a bit with buttonhole twist long ago (which means it was more incidential experimenting not so much a wanted one...).

The result was: it is not good to make buttonholes on an the sewn a machine. If you have an automatic buttonhole the stitches will be to dense to form something nice and also if you use it on the spool and on the bobbing you have good chances to spend the next 20 minutes getting out all the mingled thread of your machine.

It is thicker and also "softer" than normal thread for the machine so some machines can not run it from the spool at all but even if the machine is able to handle it, it ravels and breaks easier then normal thread.

Usually the result with a satin or buttonhole stitch is just not very attractive. (Machine embroidery thread is the better choice here.)

If the machine can handle the thread (my old 1960th Singer did, also my Bernina can be convinced to accept it) then it can be sometimes used for topstitching, sewing slowly with with a large needle (100 or 110) and a long stitch. And with a normal thread on the bobbin. Some decorative stitches can look attractive, too if they are not based on satin stitch.

(Bobbin work should be possible, but I never tried that)

I usually have Guetermann, which is the standard brand in German shops. But I didn't see big differences to the one or two other brands I used.

(And I've seen prewaxed buttonhole thread once... never use that on the sewing machine!)

love the dresses.
And cool about the ribbon. I don't know if it is the colour on my monitor, but to me it looks like the ribbon is quite a match for the dress with the blue and pink!

I was going to say something about my experience with buttonhole twist but Nowaks said it all... I'm using it for topstitching the Badgley Mischka suit and if the right needle is used (100 or 110 like Nowaks said), together with regular thread on the bobbin and a long stitch, the results are awesome (I also find that loosening the tension on the needle by a bit also helps).

Congratulations again for the ribbon! You have quite a collection!
