The Collar, Again.
Here are the photos with mock-ups of the collar.
Fur (leftover from another project, but close enough to get the idea):
Ivory fabric, same as lining:
Blue collar, eventually with same border as coat sleeves, front and hem:
Hmm. Well, I can tell you that I don't like the light colored collars at all. I thought I would because they would be a nice contrast to all the blue. The fur is all wrong with the borders, feathers and flowers. If this coat was solid (like red dupioni!), the fur would look wonderful. It isn't so out it goes. Feathers, which weren't pictured, looked as bad or worse than the fur. So much for those. I didn't like the ivory fabric, either. That leaves one option: a blue collar. Surprisingly, this is the option I really like, and was the one I didn't think I'd like at all. I draped one side with an old border sample and determined that it wouldn't be too much. I was afraid that it would be too.much.border. and that the coat would wear me, not me wear it.
The soft bow at the neck is staying, regardless of collar option. I'm not sure how long it will be - I'll need to test that. The original pattern just had some tie ends at the neck, but I think the coat needs the bow for a few reasons. First, the bow will be made of silk georgette, which will make the bow soft and drapey. Because the coat is quilted and has a stiffer silhoutte, the bow is a nice contrast. Second, the bow color helps to break up the blue a bit without being overwhelming. Third, the bow is very feminine and pretty - a recurrent sub-theme of my art garments. Fourth, another bow will also be used on the back of the dress at the bottom of the collar giving the dress some interest at the back and will look pretty with the tails floating down the runway. I suppose you won't be able to talk me out of the bow, huh?
My son wandered into the studio while I was comparing collar options and taking pictures early one morning. I showed him the options and asked him what he thought. His opinion was the same as mine: he liked the blue collar best and the fur was too much. What do you think?
Parting Shot: Scrabble. I think I've created another Scrabble addict. We both like to play, but it is hard to find people to play us. The computerized version is the perfect solution because we can play at our own levels and is much faster than a real game. BTW, you readers did have me laughing over your responses to yesterday's Parting Shot. If you do have more computers than living beings in your home, I understand.

Gotta agree with you - the fur is too much and the blue collar just right. I can't wait to see this entire outfit; it's gonna be gorgeous!
I agree. In concept, I would have bet money on the white fur but as soon as I saw it all I could think about was suffocating. I think the white really takes away from the details in the coat.
I agree, the white fur is too overpowering and becomes the focal point of the garment. This outfitis a going to be amazingly stunning!
I agree too. The collar in white contrasted too much and didn't seem to fit in. The blue is much nicer.
I vote for the blue collar as well!
Bote for the blue collar too! It's beautiful! Lovely blog...
it seems the blue is the hands down winner (like this garment will be on the runway)
I can't wait to see it when it's finished.
Hi - long-time avid reader, first time poster. Your work is exquisite - I very much enjoy following the whole wonderful process of constructing art to wear. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
I agree with the consensus regarding the blue collar however, wonder if the big soft flowing bow hides your beautiful workmanship and steals attention/impact from the border beading, scallops and applique?
Jane
Blue for me too.
I was wondering about a tiny bit of blue beading along the edges of the fabric that makes the bow. Just to tie it in....so to speak...and it will give you a tad more beading to do, too (we know you love beading)... ;-)
I agree with the Blue Collar Consensus! Much nicer than the other choices. Funny how you never know until you actually try, isn't it?
I also agree with Jane about the long ties on the bow, and perhaps these are just on your mock-up so you don't have to cut, but I think shorter tie-ends would be nicer. At this length, they seem to want all the attention for themselves.
Definitely blue too. When I saw your post in the reader, I only saw the first picture with all the white in it, and thought it was a pity and distracting far too much. Reading on I saw your alternatives, and your own opinion on these, and I can only agree with you.
My reaction was much like Sigrid's! I agree with your plan 100%.
The white collars make it look too much like a ceremonial robe. The blue is much better. I did momentarily think a darker blue collar would be nice though.....even a darker blue fur (but much smaller collar).
I agree, the contrasting collars detract from the amazing beading and embroidery and plainer will be better. it's going to look fabulous!
Ditto the blue collar opinions.
I am a huge bow fan too though I second what Liana said as far as size. But she's right that this just may be your mock-up. At any rate, I love everything so far and remain in awe of you...
Blue coat with blue collar will be beautiful!! Best Wishes for 2009!
I LOVE the bow concept! You are on the right track in my opinion!
No surprises here, I like the blue too! :)
My family plays a variation of Scrabble that's fun too - I'll try to remember to send you an email with the instructions...
