Ride 'Em Cowboy - Trousers - Part II
Piping and Snap Detail
By now you've noticed that the trousers are plain black. You also probably know by now that a plain black trouser will not do for me for an art garment. The theme of the art garment must be carried through to all the pieces in some way for the entire ensemble to be cohesive. With that in mind, I added some red piping and red snap details.
In the photo below, you can see the assembly process for the belt loops. I started with the rectangle for the belt loop, then basted the piping in place, stitched the loop lining to the loop wrong sides together and then turned the loop right side out. There were only four belt loops, so it wasn't a big deal to construction them this way.
Here is a close-up of a finished belt loop:
The waistband is cut in two parts, rather than a wide waistband that is folded in half to create the waistband and waistband facing. This was good for this style of belt loop, since it is thicker than a regular loop because of the addition of the piping. I was able to baste the loops in place on the trousers, apply the waistband and then stitch the top portion of the loops in place when the waistband facing was applied.
Instead of finishing the waistband with a button and buttonhole, I decided that since I had extra snaps (I had to order 50 of the same color!) that I might as well use those for the trousers, too. They were just as easy to install as a button/buttonhole and add a nice pop of color. Not that it will ever be seen under the western style belt buckle. (Yes, my next accessory purchase. I'm looking for one with a star or a steer or both in a child's size, not dinner plate size.)
Tomorrow I'll show you the pockets - I intend to finish their embellishment tonight. Once that is done the trousers will be finished except for hem which I mentioned yesterday.
Parting Shot: Hanging Out. Kiwi has taken to hanging out in my studio for a while during the day. She usually hangs out on the ledge like this. Today she was watching the rain and napping.
