Vacation Wardrobe - Vintage Skirt Simplicity 6789 (1974)

Fashions of the 1970's usually do not appeal to me, but this little skirt did. If you've read my blog for any length of time, you probably know by now that I prefer fashions from the 1950's or so. This skirt will be perfect to take on vacation and was a great way to incorporate some of this summer's bright colors into my wardrobe.

The fabric is a heavy bright yellow denim. This denim is woven with some sort of shiny rayon, I believe, as the back is shiny and the frayed edges have a shiny thread to them. It frays terribly, so all pieces had to be serged before I could work with them. I chose the denim for this pattern because I also knew it would hang and flare nicely.

The pattern claims to be a "Jiffy Skirt" and it was very easy to put together. Because this is a wrap skirt, there are no zippers, so that made it quicker to make. If you really wanted to make the skirt quickly, you could eliminate the pockets.

The skirt wraps in the back and the ends button onto the buttons in the front. I probably should have shortened the tabs, so that more of the buttons would show, as my waist is usually smaller than patterns that fit my hips. In fact, I could button this tighter, but it's not bad as it is.

Overall, a quick skirt to make, and a bright color for summer. It makes me happy, and I'm sure I'll get a smile out of someone while wearing it, even if they are laughing at me behind my back! I just came back from the salon, and I got some compliments there - it was fun to wear, too.

Parting Shot: Lily. The white lilies started to bloom the other day and I just noticed them! There is a lot of foliage in that bed so it is hard to see what is blooming sometimes.

Such a cute skirt. You look so adorable in all of your "vintage" clothes -- you should be a model!! And I agree with Vicki - you have some cute shoes girl!

PS did you get your Padfolio???

The details are so nice. Great summer skirt. the combination with black is stunning, no laughing after your back, just plain admiration. Love your hair too. New style?

Really cute skirt and your hair looks great. I noticed the hair before the yellow, so the yellow is not too bright or out of place.

oh! I still have this pattern and remember making a skirt from it when I was in high school. I liked the style then and think it still looks wonderful.

Too bad I don't weigh the same now as I did then. :-)

Adorable skirt!

By any chance do you know which lilies the white ones are? My oldest daughter (17) is crazy about lilies, has started a small bed of them and would like to add more. I have not found pure white ones here yet and know she would like some if I can find them. TIA. ;o)

OMG, I LOVE that skirt - it's awesome! I really have to find that pattern. At the risk of dating myself I won't tell you how many skirts just like that I had in high school.

I know I made that skirt in the
70s... twice! One was a pinky/coralish denim and I wore it with a white, cap-sleeved tee and a cute little scarf around my neck - just like on the pattern.

I was thinking about this skirt just the other day. Have to look for one for me - the original was destroyed in a house fire.
