SWAP 2008

Garment #11 - Denim Shorts

Here they are, the shorts, which is the final SWAP item and third item from the wardrobe pattern, shown below:

This is also the pattern that had the missing pattern pieces for the shorts. I finally did locate another pattern, but it was a girl's size 7, as this pattern was produced in teen and girl's sizes. I ended up having to grade the pattern up. What I did was to compare my measurements to the measurements listed for a size 7. I then figured out the difference and divided that amount up among the outer seams to come up with the correct garment width. I also compared the crotch curve of the smaller pattern pieces to the crotch curve of a pattern that fits me well (a Patrones) to get the same fit. Strangely enough, the crotch curves were very similar. I made up a muslin, and after one small fix to the back crotch curve and taking in the side seams, I had shorts that fit. I took apart the muslin and used it to cut out the shorts. I will be storing the muslin with the patterns in case I need to make another pair.

The shorts have pockets, which I lined with the same plaid as the jeans:

They also have a center back zipper, for which I used an invisible zipper. The shorts have a waistband with a neat little triangular end. I topstitched the shorts with a white shiny rayon.

All that's left now is the photo shoot! I'm hoping to get that done sometime this week.

Q/A; Thanks for all the comments on the red refashioned sweater! Although I'm not new to the concept (I've had items and an article published in Altered Couture), I haven't refashioned any garments recently. I had both Sigrid and Paco ask the same thing regarding the sweater. They wanted to know if I could wear it with my Easter dress. Yes, I will wear it with the Easter dress - it matches nicely. I can also wear it with some of my SWAP garments, too.

Parting Shot: Dress, 1974. This is the last of the vintage 70's patterns that I want to show you. While this one is definitely from the 70's, I think it still would work well today and have seen similar styles in recent years. Those green t-strap shoes are cool, too!

You had me with the shorts. I love those! They are just.so.darn.cute I can't stand it. Then, when I scroll down to the parting shot, you've got the dress!

I made that dress in green in 1974 or 1975 with a bit of gold braid across the waistline. I was about 14 and needed a "floating hostess" dress for an older friend's wedding. Thanks for the memories!

Summerset, your parting shot brought back great memories! My mom made this dress (the long version)in pale green (about the color of the other view) qiana to wear to my wedding in 1978. And you're right; it would be perfectly in style today. Mom is now in a nursing home and I recently cleaned out her sewing room (yes, I still plan to send you the belt kit when I find it!) so now I can't wait to get into her patterns and see if this one is there. Thanks for the memories...

Great shorts, that vintage pattern certainly has a contemporary look. Love your details, as always.

BTW, did you see my mail or was it regarded as spam?

Wow, gorgeous looking denim shorts! I love the back zipper detail (as you know the DWP pants also have a back zipper; it was my first time with a back zipper on pants and I loved it!)!You've finished your swap already! Congratulations!

That was my college choir's dress!I think they used that pattern for about 15 years. It was amazingly good on any size and shape. We had indestrucable polyester crepe-like fabric in a medium blue. Thanks for the memory! I don't think I have the pattern any more. We passed them around to the next year's new members. I still have my dress though!

Not only *could* that pattern be made again today, but I'm pretty sure it *was*! And it was fabulous!
Now I just have to remember whose blog I saw it on... was it Ann of Gorgeous Things maybe...?

Wow, popular dress pattern!
That was my bridesmaid's dress in 1978. We made it from apricot crepe.

love the comments about using that pattern for weddings. I was married in 1976 and my mother made this dress of blue silky brocade to wear for the occasion. My mother is also in a nursing home and sadly we did not find the dress or the pattern when we cleaned out the house.

Thanks for the memory
