One Down, One to Go!
My daughter's Easter dress is done!
There will be pictures of her wearing next week, but for right now, I am going to show you some of the final details.
The lining:
The buttons:
I did not originally plan on these buttons. Once the dress was completed, I held up the other buttons to the dress, and they weren't the right shade of pink. I found these instead and embellished them with some beads on the last pass of the thread through the button. Embellishing an embellishment, is that ok, Carolyn? Or, does that count as two embellishments? (Carolyn has written some great posts on embellishing - check all three parts out, especially if you're shy or unsure of embellishments!)The flowers on the front:
My daughter did not want the rows and rows and rows of lace on the front of the dress as per the original pattern (I don't blame her!). Without the lace, the dress did look a little plain. Taking a cue from the pattern envelope, I added some flowers (with her approval) at the waist. The flowers are just silk flowers with the plastic centers removed. I fused a square of silk organza to the back to strengthen the flowers and then stitched the sequins and beads to the flower.
You can see from the photo above that I also made the flowers detachable, so that the dress could be washed. I sewed one half of a clear snap to the back and the other half to the dress. When the dress needs to be washed, off come the flowers, thus keep them from the dangers of the washer and dryer.Q/A: Regarding my Easter dress, I've had a few questions. Vicki noticed that the dress would match the white velvet jacket and Vicki W asked if I would wear the dress and jacket together. Considering that it will probably be around freezing here on Easter Sunday, the velvet jacket is a candidate to be worn. If I don't like the look, I'll wear either my black or red cardigan with the dress. LauraLo wanted to know if I was going to make one side of the sash red and one side black. Actually, I bought enough fabric to make two sashes. The red one is my first choice, but I will probably wear the black one for the Easter choir concert on Sunday evening so as not to be totally distracting from the message of the music.
Parting Shot: Even Pirates have to vacuum. My son would much rather play pirate than vacuum, but household chores must be done, pirates or not!

The perfect man - a vacuuming pirate! Love the dress. The flowers at the waist are the perfect embellishment. Much better than lace!
The dress is beautiful and I too like it better without the lace! What will you use to cover your daughter's arms?
I really miss making my DD's Easter dresses and have vicariously enjoyed the making of your daughter's!
BTW - thanks for the reference about the embellishment posts! I am taking a break from pattern alterations, before diving back in to cut the fabric out for my Easter suit.
What a clever girl you are with those flowers. As I was reading I was thinking - I wonder how they will wash and iron up - but of course you have already tackled that! Love the dress and technically I think you have more than 3 embelishments - ribbon, buttons, flowers, sequins, sparkly fabric......perfect for a pretty young girl!!
I love your daughter's dress. It's so cute, and just perfect for Easter. The dogwood flowers are perfect embellishments, too.
Your son is adorable doing chores in his costume. Even pirates have to "swab the deck."
Very pretty Easter dress, the flowers are a nice addition. Your son is so cute in his costume.
The dress is beautiful. I love the fabric, so springy. Now if we could just get to weather to match!

Your dd's dress is very sweet.
Baring any last minute complications, I'm on the home stretch on dd's Easter dress too.
BTW, could you send that cleaning pirate to do a little cleaning at my house? I miss my kids playing dress-up.
Love the dress. Love the detachable flowers.
Exquisite! What a lovely dress! I love its simple lines, yet fabulous details! The flowers on the front are a very nice touch! Your little princess will be the best dressed young lady in the Church! Happy Easter to you and your family!
I really love the subtle embellishment Summerset, its perfect! My daughters have outgrown their interest in heirloom, both are heading into middle school next year, but I've saved every dress I ever made for both of them.
I love your daughter's dress--I read this entry when you first posted it. The flowers have been in the back of my mind the entire time...they will be the perfect solution to camouflage a design error on a shirt for my DGD! The way you put them on with snapseliminates the inconvenience of removing them for laundry for my DDIL.
I love your projects and will be visiting your garments at the Long Beach Quilt Show in July. Can't wait!
Thanks so much for your detailed posts and your beautiful and creative work!
