The Red Trench - Part Eight

Finished!

I did finish the trench last night! The pictures above were taken outside this afternoon, and there might have been more, but it's 17 degrees F outside plus the wind is blowing and it's too cold for just a turtleneck, jeans and a trench coat!

First, I'd like to give a great big "Thank You" to Tany! She sent me the fabric, covered buttons and traced me the pattern from her copy of Patrones. Without her, this trench wouldn't be here. Add to that inspiration from her finished trench and all her help, and I think I've been blessed with not only a coat, but a good friend.

Below you can see the Christian LaCroix trench which was the main inspiration, on sale at La Redoute for $269.99:

Below is the back taken indoors. I am pleased with the back shoulder area. Thanks to all of you who helped me get the fit just right - it obviously helped to make my coat better! (Yes, I know, I still have that extra slope on the right shoulder, even after adding shoulder pads!)

Here are some details from my coat. A few of them are similar to Tany's version of the trench, but I've added a few of my own.

As you can see from the pictures above and know from previous posts, I added inseam pockets to the side seam. Also added, but not seen are some thin shoulder pads. To the center back neck, I added a hanging loop:

I added an additional button underneath each covered button for support, like Tany did:

Of course, there are the bound buttonholes. Below is the view from the wrong side. I prefer to finish bound buttonholes with a rectangular opening.

Last, but not least, the hem ruffle. I made mine single and narrower than the pattern originally called for; mine is 3 1/2", the original was 4 1/2" and there were two of them. I also pleated mine differently with small box pleats. I stitched the ruffle on with two rows of parallel stitching hoping that this method would discourage drooping of the ruffle. The ruffle is attached in such a way that if I get tired of it in a few years, I can remove it without damaging the hem or lining. In other words, I attached it first, then finished the hem and lining.

Overall, I really love this coat! It is too bad, but I probably won't wear it much until next spring when the weather is warmer. It's getting to be heavy wool coat and parka weather here.

Parting Shot: Christmas Gift for a Friend. Two of my friends have make-up brush rolls that I made for them and wanted one for a third friend. Now, you know, that I threw away the little diagram I sketched on a small piece of packaging cardboard when I cleaned out the studio thinking I wouldn't need it! I figured it out, and in the bottom photo, you can see that the top folds down to protect the brush bristles, while the bottom has various sized pockets for the brush handles.

Trully spectacular! It was great pleasure and a honour having a small part in the becoming of your trench! I really admire your work and the details you added are just fabulous! If we meet some day (I hope we do) we must take our trenchs and show them to each other!
Hugs from Portugal!

Your trench is fantastic! I have been haunting your blog all day waiting for signs of the finished trench! Your beautiful trench is worth the many trips...*LOL* The one question I had was about the ruffled hem but from reading I see that you have made it so that it can be removed when it is no longer fashionable! You have thought of everything to make this a fashionable yet classic trench that can be worn for many years! It is simply amazing!

Fabulous! Don't know that any other words are necessary. Love everything about it, but especially, the fact that it's RED. ;)

There were little peeks of the lining in those pics. Can we see more of how that turned out?

What an awesome awesome coat! That color looks amazing on you. I particularly like the use of the box pleats for the ruffles. Lovely!

Ditto everyone else! Fabulous. And you will have it hanging in your wardrobe for when spring does arrive. I was wondering about the lining too - did you underline? Can we see a pic of the lining?

OMG... It turned out gorgeous! I love it. It can easily transition from daytime wearing jeans to and evening trench! Fantastic job!

Amazing work-love the details especially the ruffled hem. I think that I might just be tempted to wear such a beautiful coat anyway-I am having a difficult time truly appreciating how cold it is becoming in your part of the world-sitting here in shorts and singlet debating about whether to put the air conditioner on.

Wow, Summerset, this is a spectacular coat. Thank you for showing it in "real life" wearing it. I'm sure you will wear it a lot when the weather is less cold with you.

Absolutely beautiful coat, Summerset! I bet you can't wait for milder temperatures. You are going to be the smartest woman in your whole town come March!

That brush case is nifty. Now I only use mineral make-up, I should think about making one for my brushes for when I travel.
Have a happy Sunday!

That red makes me drool a little bit! The shape is absolutely lovely, and that ruffle on the bottom makes me want to break out my ruffler foot and make ruffles. For what, I'm not sure...

Lovely!

Beautiful coat. Such attention to minute details makes it a couture item. The RTW one doesn't have anything on yours which I like better. Great job!

The coat is beautiful. It makes me want to make a trench. When I saw it in La Redoute I actually considered buying it but then I figured I could do something better with $230.

I love this! And as always, you've done beautiful work. Love those buttonholes.

At first glance I thought that first pic was the fashion photo from the pattern! So I guess the coat suits you well!

The details are meticulous as always and I love the surprise lining. Beautiful work.

Your Dad and I are very proud of you...all those trips to Fabric King have finally paid off. But I guess you didn't get your love of design, fabric, and color too far from home.

Love,
Mom
